2000 Sydney Olympics Journal -
Back in Sydney!
Canberra was nice, but it's good to be back where all the buzz is taking place. What an incredible event, the Olympics! It brings the best out of people. Everybody is very friendly - friendly almost to a fault if there is such a thing. The next eight days are going to be crazy now that the wrestling has started. I saw where the women's softball team has had a nightmare of a tournament thus far. I believe they have lost three games now. And this comes after going 112 straight games without a loss. I feel so bad for them. It's hard to explain what happened there. Sometimes when you're not faced with much adversity, it's tough to deal with it when it's staring you in the face. That's why I'm a firm believer that losses are a good thing if they occur at the right time. Unfortunately, the Olympics are not one of those times.
Sorry girls! I feel for you! Medals are being won left and right. The good old U.S. of A. is doing great! Our swimmers showed well, our track and field athletes will dominate. And I'm hoping our wrestlers will do the same.
It's neat for me to experience the Olympics from a different perspective having gone through it as an athlete. As an athlete, you're almost oblivious to everything that's taking place around you. You are so completely enveloped with your own situation, that it's impossible to care about much else. It's like having blinders on and never looking up until that last whistle blows and ends your event. Only then do you notice such obvious things as the people around you, the sights, the hoopla. So it's very comforting to wipe those stress lines from my forehead and just enjoy the Olympic Games. I even take deep breaths now. It's great!
