Jim Akerly
SMWC Patron
Jim is the Head Coach at American University in Washington D.C. He received a Patron Award
from SMWC for contributions to our programs including active support and clinics in 1996.
Jim came to this area from the University of Virginia, where he was the assistant wrestling coach
for the 1993-94 and 1994-95 seasons. During his tenure, the Cavaliers placed one All-American
and three Academic All-Americans as well as a Top-Ten academic ranking among Division One
wrestling programs.
Previously, he's held assistant coaching positions with his alma mater, West Virginia, Edinboro
University, Rider College and the Pennsylvania Jr. Freestyle and Greco National Teams.
The Pennsylvania Jr. Wrestling Hall of Fame member graduated from WVU in 1989 with a
degree in physical education. During his career with the Mountaineer matmen, Akerly set a
school record for most wins, with a 119-36-4 record in the 150 lb weight class. He was an NCAA
All American in 1987 and a three-time NCAA national qualifier. Also, he was a finalist at the
prestigious Midlands Tournament in 1986.
Following his collegiate career, Akerly was a standout with the Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club in Pheonix, AZ, from 1989-90.
A native of Erie, PA, Jim attended Cathedral Prep.
