The 2002 luau August 10th was a great success. The music went late and the SMWC crew stayed until the very end. Kevin Buff won a surfboard for best main dish and Diane Rowe won one for best female costume. Coach Jason won best male costume. Coach G took his shirt off and Mrs G did a jig. William McKinney came up from camp and Nick Alley turned 21 the night before. We all had a fun time with the "real" surfing folks. For a complete report go to: Snake's 2002 Luau

It is terrible that Maryland AAU continues to cause problems for SMWC AAU members who live in Maryland but are members of our PV AAU registered club. When will we ever get someone as an AAU registration chairman for Maryland who has their act together and quits causing problems for our legally registered members? All this type of nonsence ever does is cause more and more folks to drop their AAU membership. In this latest fiasco, the MD AAU Chairman threatens to have Mike Rowe and Jason Gabrielson banned from AAU for "not" being registered with a Maryland AAU club. Both registered at Grand Nationals using the Internet and neither competed for our club at any other AAU event during the season. The national registration person even got on Coach G for trying to clear the problem up by stating that he wasn't a current registered member. Guess Life Membership status doesn't mean anything to the registration folks. Just one more reason to question "who has their act together at AAU?"

SMWC's Surf Camp Aug 3-4 put on by Coach G was a real blast. Many members and their parents learned how to hang ten from Coach G. Our group stayed the night at Surf Sessions Surf Camp in Fenwick Island. We surfed at Assateague and 36th St in Ocean City. By the second day even Bob Black and Larry Woody were charging. Longest wave goes to Cool Foot Lucus Black (left) while the consistency award goes to Michael the Demon Dunker Rowe (right). The most improved second day award goes to Stephen the Terror. The Sandy Shredder goes to Reed, while the Diehard goes to Debbie. The Head Turner goes to Nicole. The "Bad Beached Boys" handle goes to Michael, Luke, Steven, and Nathan. Thanks to the "Mom" crew for the great feed on Sat. night.

SMWC's Brent Jones finishes 2nd in USAW Greco-Roman Cadet Nationals and 7th in Freestyle at Fargo. SMWC's Mike Rowe finishes 2nd in USAW Freestyle Cadet Nationals. In Juniors, Walt Hoffman, Franco Priolo had great runs but just missed placing.

Coach G severly sprained his back in early July. Couldn't walk for over a week. He's back on track now and planning the final details of his surf camp weekend. If you haven't formally committed to the camp for Aug 3-4 do so immediately as space is limited. Currently the camp cost is $33 which includes a board and room for one night. Surf camp sign-ups as of July 19th: Mike Rowe, Walt Hoffman, Steve and Debbi Sargent, the Black's, the Brown-Gassman's (Reid, Firen and Kelby), and Jeff Williams.

SMWC did very good at the AAU Grand Nationals this week in Shreveport, LA. With only 14 wrestlers, the club finished in 4th place overall against some full state teams. Eric Hoffman (Bantam 55) was 1st in Sombo, 2nd in Freestle and Greco. Wes Jones (Midget 70) was 1st in Sombo and Greco, 2nd in Freestyle. Ryan Buff (Schoolboy 105) was 2nd in Greco, and 1st in Freestyle. Matt Jones (Schoolboy 115) was 1st in Sombo, 2nd in Greco and Freestyle. Mike Rowe (Cadet 119) was 1st in all three styles. Brent Jones (Cadet 189)was 1st in all three styles. Walter Hoffman (Elite 171) was 2nd in sombo, 1st in Greco and Freestyle. Just wrestling Freestyle only and placing 1st was Jason and Kevin Gabrielson, Ryan Herwig, and Ryan Green. Mike Rowe and Brent Jones also won AAU Triple Crown for the second time each. They won AAU Folkstyle Nationals in Pontiac Michigan earlier. Coach Jason reported that SMWC's Buddy Lee was on hand offering pointers to our members.

We need a place to store two mat sections over the summer. Please contact Mary or Coach G immediately if you have room. Roy Hill also reports that he is getting new room liners and can provide his old ones to another school if interested.

SMWC's Cam Watkins and Rudy Rueda are in Spain on a cultural exchange visit.

It was a long tough day at the East Coast FS Club Championships and Maryland State Games on June 14th. SMWC entered one of its smallest teams in several years with only 18 members. When the smoke cleared, SMWC had 10 firsts, 3 seconds, and 1 third, enough for a one point win over runner-up Hartford Grapplers. Individual winners at these games will receive an invitation to the 2003 State Games of America in Hartford, CT next summer. The picture on the right is SMWC's Kevin Gabrielson in the finals. During the tournament, long time SMWC member (since the 80s) Andre Kelly indicated that he may be interested in our coaching job for this fall. Andre has been involved with our club as a coach at many local and national events and would be a good asset as a new head coach. Complete team results are as follows:

SMWC - 90, Hartford Grapplers - 89, Team Delaware - 87, Team Eclipse (NJ) - 64, Team Connecticut - 63, Silver Springs Mat Club - 45, Frederick Mat Club - 34, Orange Crush - 18.

So Long for Summer From the Crew at Our Final Season Practice

Had a good size contingent show up for our last practice of the season on Thursday, June 12th. After practice we moved the mats from the multi-purpose room to near the gym. The picture on the left shows us moving one of the five mat sections while the picture on the right shows Brent Jones getting some pointers from Coach Jason. After some long discussions, we should be in the gym for practices starting in September. We had the gym for many years before a fire forced us to move to Gwynn Park a few years back.

One of the best practices this spring was Tuesday, June 11th. College wrestlers of all sizes were in abundance including SMWC's Mark Hoffer, Willie Harris, Luke Palumbo, the Gabrielson's, plus Steve Arslanian were working on each other as well as the high school and younger wrestlers present. Rudy got his xxx kicked, but fortunately only by the college wrestlers his size that were there. One item to note was it was payback for Rudy's "trash talk" at the SMWC picnic a few weeks back. We were all looking for a grudge match but didn't really see anything but the pounding.

The SMWC All-Stars held their annual picnic and awards cerimony June 1st at the William's home. Kelly Williams is pictured on the right getting some sun while others sit under the tent in the shade. Most members came for some fun in the sun, some pool time, a bounce or two on the trampoline, or good food. Coach G showed up late wearing his OZ hat having competed in a surf contest during the day. Check HERE for a full story with pictures.

Had cake for Coach Jason after practice June 5th. It was his birthday. A large number of members showed up. Jason didn't know the cake was there and we surprised him with the cake and a rendition of the Happy Birthday song.

SMWC's annual club party was a great success. Many members, old and new came by to visit. Ryan Forman had his graduation party earlier in the day and then came over with Nick Alley and the Herwigs to celebrate. Look HERE for more pictures.

SMWC's Marty Margolis and Jon Peters won at the Old Mill FO tournament.

All-Star's that purchased a new uniform this year that had the wrong lettering to make sure they bring the old singlet cleaned to the picnic and it will be replace with the corrected singlet other wise they will have to wait until the fall.

Club members be warned that the person who continually tries to trash our club now has a new tactic. He is attaching a virus to a document called SMWC2002flyer.doc. no attachments are ever sent to our email list. They are usually posted on our site instead.

Great news at practice May 28th. Beginning in the fall, SMWC will again have the gym for regular practices.

SMWC's Ryan Buff went to Toms River, NJ on June 1 and 2, and competed in the Mid-Atlantic AAU Championship for Freestyle and Greco. He took 1st in both. He also participated in several of the qualifiers for this tournament and took 3rd place in most points accumulated for the Schoolboy Division in Freestyle and Greco.

SMWC's Mark Hoffer reports American university will host wrestling camps in June and July. Call (202) 885-3052 for more information.

1st week - June 25-28 Leg Attack and Takedown
2nd week - July 9-12 "Tough on Top" (Tilts and Turns)

Reminder - The Cael Sanderson Camp at Millersville Univ. is scheduled July 14-18.

Currently thinking about the weekend of Aug 4-5 for Coach Gs surfing campout weekend for club members.

Two big events for our club. Our annual big SMWC Club party will be Sat, June 1st at the Rudea's in Waldorf. Call 301 893-2196 for directions and info. SMWC All-Star Party June 8th at the Williams in Owings. Call 301 855-0324 for directions and information.

On 26 May, SMWC's Cameron Watkins and Corey Keener captured the Ironman championships in Nashville, TN. Corey took first place in Freestyle and Folkstyle and placed second in Greco-Roman. Cameron won freestyle, but was hurt in the finals of his GR match to finish second. Despite the injury, he continued in FO and placed second with an injury default. He will likely be out for the rest of the summer.

HOWARD UNIVERSITY CANCELLS WRESTLING

Good turnout for practice May 16th and 20th. Open wrestlers are starting to show again as well as several tough smaller wrestlers. Coaches Jason and Kevin are working with members.

Practice will be May 20th (Monday) rather then Tuesday, May 21st. Mark your calendar. We go back to Tues and Thurs after that.

SMWC Coaches Kevin and Jason are organizing a trip to Shriveport, LA for the 2002 AAU Grand Nationals, June 19-22. There will be some "heavy hitters" from the college ranks going along to compete. Entry forms and information are available at practice.

Strange weather lately - a level 5 tornado, no rain, too much rain, golfball size hail, we've seen it all. Practice was called Tuesday night when a freak wind storm knocked out power at RB.

SMWC' Ryan Buff is on a mission again. He won Greco and Freesytle at the AAU tournament in Wilmington, Delaware on 5-5-02. He also won Greco and Freestyle at the AAU tournament at Solanco on 5-11-02.

SMWC's Kevin & Jason Gabrielson will assume coaching activities beginning this week.

SMWC's Corey Keener won the Virginia Kids Freestyle and Greco State Titles.

Despite only having seven SMWC members show for the team duals at Hayfield, SMWC still placed in the top 3. We beat every team on the mat. Gunston was very tough. Big SMWC winners were Rudy Rueda and Mike Waite. Ryan Buff looked exceptional beating four of his 5 opponents.

SMWC's Mike Rowe wins Ohio TOC. Mike also recently received his AAU Triple Crown Award for winning all three AAU Nationals last year (left). - way to go Mike.

Look for SMWC's banner in the stands at the Ohio TOC.

SMWC is trying to fill a team for the club duals at Hayfield next Sunday. Weight classes are HS+3 starting at 98 lbs. We are currently missing 98, 119, 126, 152, 171, 215, and Hwt. Please contact Coach G immediately if you are interested.

A Bulgarin wrestling star is interested in becomming our new coach. He would like to migrate to the US but would need a job. His degree is in coaching so he would need to be trained in something here. Anyone with an idea let Coach G know.

According to Rudy Rueda, Carlos has been spouting hot air about our club again Seems he tells people Coach G had something to do with the Dematha wrestlers not showing at a recent MSWA event. Carlos will never get off our "bad Boy" list it seems. SMWC wrestlers have never been encouraged to "not show" at any event.

There will not be a practice on Thursday, April 25th due to a school function. No practice also for May 7th. We are trying to get the room for Monday, May 6th that week.

SMWC's Corey Keener won at NOVA1 FS

SMWC's AAU Folkstyle National Championship Team
National Champs - Corey Keener, Brent Jones, Mike Rowe

SMWC's Jason Kessling placed 5th at High School Senior Nationals. Jason becomes our 7th HS All-American in recent years.
