2000 Challenge
Cup Team Winner - Team Maryland
XVI Potomac Valley Challenge Cup
Robinson HS, Virginia
June 10th, 2001
Despite a last minute change in date and location, the sixteenth edition of the Potomac Valley Challenge Cup,
the DC Metro Region's premier freestyle event, went off with a bang on June 10th. Virginia Coach's
Bryan Hazard and Roy Hill (left) did an excellent job in hosting the event at Robinson HS.
Reminiscent of the years when Bryan competed in the Cup, Virginia and Maryland brought a
host of High School State Champs and top junior league wrestlers for their annual
end of the season challenge to determine local freestyle "bragging rights." No one went
home dissappointed.
Maryland's strong team this year was led by State and National Prep Champions Kevin Gabrielson and Ryan Davis. Kevin was ranked 4th nationally during the season and is a High School All-American. Other champions on the Maryland Team included National Prep Champ Rudy Reuda, High School State Champ Ryan Green, and junior league sensations Mike Rowe, Jason Jacovsky, and Jeff Williams (above right). The team was coached by Steve Jacovski, Jason Gabrilson, and Brandon and Ivan Hardnett. Interestingly, Jason and the Hardnett brothers also were Cup competitors during their high school years.
Virginia was led by some of the states top high school seniors: Tomas Ovali and Grant Maxfield, and some
outstanding high school
juniors: Doug Kittell, Kyle Graham and Bruce Ross. Outstanding junior league wrestler Ronnie Mills also
showed why he is expected to be a strong contender in the Virginia high school ranks next season.
There were many fine matches during the Cup this year. In fact, most every match was a great one. Some of the up and coming young guns, like Maryland's Kyle Parker, had a chance to show their potential against the best in the region. Look for them to do well this fall.
Mary Woody acted as Head Pairer while Bruce Gabrielson (both pictured above) served as Head Official for the Cup this year. Thanks for their hard work and support in this all volunteer event. Also thanks to other local Virginia officials who supported the Cup this year, including Rick Jones and Bill Swink.

2001 Cup OW - Maryland's Kevin Gabrielson
The Challenge Cup Outstanding Wrestler Awards are presented to the the junior and high school age wrestlers who have exceptional performances and generate the most team points with the fewest opponent points in pool competitions. All wrestlers in a pool face each other in round-robin matches. In some cases with small numbers in a weight class, pools will combine two weight classes. This year there were three OWs awarded. Kevin Gabrielson (165/179 pool winner) and Ryan Davis (143 pool winner) shared the high school awards while Mike Rowe (100/105.5 pool winner) was awarded top honors in the Junior age division.
In the team competition, final scores were very close as usual. A single match could have tipped
the scales either way. In the junior age competition, Maryland used its depth
and summer freestyle strength to come away with a 22 - 18 win over Virginia. Each year the Northern Virginia
off season program for kids gets bigger and better, an indication that the state's northern youth will be a
tougher contender in the future.
In the high school age competition, although Maryland forfeited the 114.5 lb weight class, its
overall team strength at every other weight was tremendous. Besides Kyle (left), a couple of other
talented wrestlers to watch next season include 175 lb. Mike Waite (currently at Blair Academy in New Jersey)
and Hwt. Conrad Bolston at St. John's in DC.
In the 16 years of cup competitions, an award has been given when a high school senior with 6 or more cups under his belt competes for the final time. Only two of these awards have been given previously. This year, senior Kevin Gabrielson (right with brother Jason and Mike Rowe senior) was presented a dedication award for competing in eleven Challenge Cup events, winning eight of them. Kevin's brother Jason, and Kahlil Malik were the two previous award winners. Maryland wrestler Ryan Herwig, not present this year, has also earned the award for seven appearances.
