Southern Maryland Wrestling Club
Spring 2000 Practice Announcement
18 time National Club Champion and defending 1999 MSWA Folkstyle
and Freestyle Club Champion Southern Maryland Wrestling Club will
begin all-age practice on Monday and Wednesday between 7:00 and 9:00pm
beginning March 13th.
Practices will be in the wrestling room
at Gwynn Park HS.
From I 495, take Branch Ave (MD Rt 5) south from D.C. about 10 miles,
turn left on Old Brandywine Road. The school is 3 blocks on the left.
Gym entrance is on the right. You can also take MD Rt 301 south about
10 miles past MD Rt 4 until the light before Rt 5. School can be seen
from 301 on the right.
Costs: We are the least expensive active club in the Washington Metro Region. Dues are $30 per season plus a $20 USAW insurance card. The only requirement we have on members is that they compete for SMWC at all open tournaments and events. Many Maryland high school state champions and college wrestlers have joined of our club over the past 17 years, and many college scholarships have been awarded to wrestlers from this club. This year several club seniors have already received wrestling scholarships. The cost of membership is insignificant when compared to the ultimate rewards a wrestler can receive.
Type of Training: During the spring, concentration will move slowly
from folkstyle into freestyle and Greco-Roman, with new moves shown
on a daily basis. By late April, most practices will be freestyle
oriented. Tournaments are supported throughout the spring and early
summer nearly
every weekend. However, you do not need to be a tournament wrestler
to join the club. Our last practice will be in July.
Coaching Information: The SMWC coaching staff features some of the most respected wrestling talent in the region. Current coaches include Olympian Buddy Lee, World Cup Runner-up Jim Howard, NCAA All-American Jim Akerly, Steve Arslanian, Rob Pribish, Roy Hill, Rick Jones, Bill Carpenter, and Craig Herwig.
Sign-ups are
at a practice. Don't wait until you're behind the curve before
signing up with the best.
