Despite missing several of its top guns, Gwynn Park HS based Southern Maryland Wrestling Club easily handled Madison Wrestling Club of Fairfax, VA in a freestyle wresling duel meet on Wednesday. Loosing only three matches to the visitors, SMWC remains the premier off season wrestling club for youth through open age wrestlers in the Washington Metro region.

"We've had a tremendous run so far." stated Head Coach Bruce Gabrielson. "Our junior league team won the Capital Area Wrestling League Crown this winter, then we walked away with the Maryland State Wrestling Association's 1999 Folkstyle Club Championships two months ago. Now our freestyle team is poised to defend its 1999 East Coast Club Championships title in June."

Hayfield HS based Gunston Wrestling Club also brought 7 members to scrimmage with SMWC members who didn't get matches, plus a number of SMWC's smaller wrestlers had to wrestle each other. Among the exciting kid's matches, Jamie Clark scored a fall at 1:21 in his match, while Ryan Buff quickly tech falled both of his opponents. The big SMWC inter-club match-up was between 8^th graders Eli black and Rudy Rueda, both considered the best in the state and region. Rudy held the edge winning a difficult 4-1 victory.

Among the high school and open matches, Gunston's Thomas Ovalle won an exciting and hard fought 5-1 victory over SMWC's Milton Yates, and Gunston's Jerome Ollanere was down 6-0 when he caught SMWC's Brandyn Hardnett in a headlock and scored a fall at 2:10.

High school seniors have certainly found success with the club. Since 1988, 51 club members received wrestling scholarships to various top schools. Five members have signed so far this year.

SMWC practices Monday and Wednesday night at Gwynn Park HS.
